These goods are then sent to distribution hubs - but it requires HGV to transport the large volumes of stock to Stores, you simply couldn’t do it with smaller vehicles. However, these drivers work out of one hub and don’t have overnight stops or very long distance runs. Let's think Brexit has been on the cards for 3 years, their was a lorry driver shortage previous to this hence foreign drivers, the government would not help train drivers ,so the haulage industry used what was available, pandemic lock down didn't even last a year.   Just to add some balance, My boss (a man) and wider employer couldn't have been more supportive and compassionate when I had both my miscarriages, and went on to be equally supportive in my 3rd successful pregnancy 25 years ago. It was a devastating time and I'm so grateful for that support. I'm a teacher, my wife and I had a still born 21 weeks...10 days after I had phonecall from the Headteacher, passing condolences, also saying I needed to think about returning to work as the 10 days authorised leave had finished. I got signed off by the doctor, upon my return it was awful, unnecessary pressure when I wanted to go on courses for CPD I got told "I've had too much time" utter disgrace to Education. I’m very lucky to have amazing parents who paid topped up my wage last year after an early loss.  It takes weeks. There's also the parents emotions, no one wants to end a pregnancy post 24 weeks. No one wants to leave hospital with a memory box instead of a newborn baby. The parents make an informed decision based on what the weeks of testing has shown. I know there will be most out there that will shout that they are all wanted but reality says that there are a lot out there that will suffer and be passed from carer to carer all their life and will suffer. While it does feel discriminatory I do think for complex medical cases the extension beyond 24 weeks is necessary- not just down syndrome but other medical cases where the mother cannot adequetely mentally, emotionally, physically provide the resources necessary for a disabled child's additional needs. Bad or mismanagement is the root cause of this.
