 ProQuest Digital Dissertations, a comprehensive digital archive of every dissertation submitted to UMI for publication from January 1997, was developed in concert with UMI's dissertation microfilming and publishing venture. Through ProQuest Digital Dissertations, UMI is now registering and depositing copies of dissertations in digital form, using CORDS (Copyright Office Electronic Registration, Recordation, and Deposit System) developed by the U.S. Copyright Office in the Library of Congress. The U.S. Copyright Office is providing UMI with all required software and technical assistance. For the near future, the Library will also continue to acquire a microform version of all dissertations as the "best edition" for archival purposes.  Readings for the project have also been held in many other cities, and continue to be held nationwide. Mr. Pinsky was recently appointed to an unprecedented third one-year term as Poet Laureate. The goal of the Favorite Poem project is to make 1,000 audio and 200 video tapes of people from all walks of life reciting their poetry. These tapes will be added to the Library's Archive of Literature on Tape as a permanent record, "at the end of the century, of what we Americans choose, and what we do with our voices and faces, when asked to say aloud a poem that we love," said Mr. Pinsky.  The Library of Congress: An Architectural Alphabet has been cited for design excellence by Washington Book Publishers. The book was one of several publications produced in 2000 in conjunction with the Library's Bicentennial celebration. "We are honored that the Library's publications continue to be recognized for design excellence by our peers in the publishing community," said W. Ralph Eubanks, the Library's director for publishing. "In conjunction with Archetype Press, our design partner, the Publishing Office developed a classic, timeless design for the book to showcase the architectural richness of the Library's Thomas Jefferson Building, which was built more than 100 years ago."   The Library of Congress digital strategy is being formulated in concert with a study, commissioned by the Librarian of Congress, by the National Research Council Computer Science and Telecommunications Board. LC 21: A Digital Strategy for the Library of Congress, was issued July 26, 2000, and made several recommendations, including that the Library, working with other institutions, take the lead in the preservation and archiving of digital materials. The National Research Council is part of the National Academy of Sciences.  The American Folklife Center's annual outdoor concert series of traditional music and dance drawn from communities across America, "Homegrown 2003: The Music of America," begins April 23. The first concert will feature Joe Derrane, noted Irish American accordionist, who will bring a group of stellar musicians from the Boston area to perform on the Neptune Plaza at noon. Hailing from Randolph, a suburb of Boston, Derrane established his reputation as one of the great Irish button accordion players when he made a series of now legendary recordings in the late 1940s, when he was only 17 years old. Nothing was heard from him for many years until he resurfaced on the Irish music scene about 10 years ago.   Rand, a Russian emigree, fled the Soviet Union in 1926 and quickly established herself in Hollywood as a script writer. Born Alice Rosenbaum, she took her pen name from her typewriter brand and from a Finnish name she liked. Rand was an outspoken supporter of capitalism and was famous for wearing a gold brooch in the shape of a dollar sign. Her "Objectivist" philosophy championed self over group, reason over belief, and human and individual good over ideal and collective moral precepts. Like her fiction manuscripts, Rand's nonfiction drafts will be of interest to textual scholars and researchers looking into her principles of authorship and aesthetics.  On May Day itself, the American Folklife Center presents Barrand and Jennifer Cutting, one of the center's folklife specialists, as hosts of "Bringing in the May," with performances from a number of Washington-area Morris teams. The program takes place at noon, May 1, on Neptune Plaza in front of the Library's Jefferson Building, located at First and Independence Avenue S.E. The groups dancing will be: Foggy Bottom Morris Men, Rock Creek Morris Women, Shepherdstown Northwest Clog Morris, the Arlington Morris Girls and the Potomac Morris Boys. There will be open Morris dancing both before and after the formal presentation, with audience participation encouraged. The teams will perform rain or shine.
