 It takes weeks. There's also the parents emotions, no one wants to end a pregnancy post 24 weeks. No one wants to leave hospital with a memory box instead of a newborn baby. The parents make an informed decision based on what the weeks of testing has shown. I know there will be most out there that will shout that they are all wanted but reality says that there are a lot out there that will suffer and be passed from carer to carer all their life and will suffer. Let the mother make the decision not a male lead legal system. While it does feel discriminatory I do think for complex medical cases the extension beyond 24 weeks is necessary- not just down syndrome but other medical cases where the mother cannot adequetely mentally, emotionally, physically provide the resources necessary for a disabled child's additional needs. Having no alternative could result in children with additional needs not being provided for, neglected, and ultimately put in the foster system. I come from a family with multiple disabilities, all of us had the possibility of being aborted due to the danger and when I have children there will be the same possibility.
