 the statistics for deaths and injuries speak for themselves and those behind these so called smart lanes have the blood on their hands and the blame solely with them. Whoever thought of the Smart Motorway wasn't very smart. Pretty obvious how dangerous it would be. Can you imagine breaking down with your children in the car. I would be petrified. If you breakdown and are on the hard shoulder they tell you to get out of the car as its dangerous. The money that has been spent is ridiculous. I just don't understand it An X on a gantry to a live lane is no substitute to the hard shoulder that stretched the length of the motor. How many push the 800 mtrs 700 mtrs 600 mtrs so on and so forth to get ahead of the queue because their day is WAY more important than everyone else, at least you have the cones for the workmen.  Absolute rubbish. Let them go- to where? The market for such people is infintesimally small. Reduce the top earners by 20%. We the listening and watching bill payers would not notice the difference if 1 or 2 filled up the only available vacancies elsewhere. There’s so much dross on the BBC. The money they spend on American Football coverage is ridiculous, especially for such a niche audience in the middle of the night. Does Eastenders really need to be on 4 nights a week?(lighter work schedule for the cast and crew would mean more palatable salaries). Why does the BBC even bother with sport? It doesn’t do it well and Sky/BT Sports/advertisers would snap up most of the few events the BBC still has on its books. There’s so many easy wins it’s amazing that they’re ONLY saving this amount.  I started on a Tuesday. I walked in, holding the teacher’s hand, feeling very small and scared. Eleven 4-and-5 year-olds stood in a line, and they, in chorus, signed: ‘Hello, Paul. Nice to meet you’. The previous afternoon, my future teaching assistant had taught all the children that phrase, plus their name. Each child then (with varying degrees of success) signed their name. It snowballed after that, and the whole class began to sign (it was SSE rather than BSL), with noticeable improvements in reading and writing over other classes in the school. As the teaching assistant was key to that, I’m guessing it was never repeated due to cost. Even 50+ years later, if I bump into one of those eleven classmates, they shift straight back into signing (again, with varying degrees of success!  Paul Selvey I agree with what you say there.   I really believe that to be amore inclusive society, schools should add an introduction to BSL to their curriculum. My father had a stroke in 2019, sadly he passed away in hospital. There were no interpreters nor did any staff know any basic BSL. I had to make a complaint to PALS of which then an interpreter came available for one hour a day. Things need to change for the deaf community.  This is the sad reality of the lack of BSL interpreters in our country. The thread of replys only goes to show there is still a serious lack of understanding that surrounds Deaf people and their language. BSL is not just simply a mode to convey the English language using hand signals. BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE is a recognised language in its own right.  Steve, that isn’t what I said at all! Plenty of disabled people travel annually with no consequences whatsoever. If you decide to travel but need to rely on strangers assistance for it the least you can do is be kind and courteous to them and not just do your own thing putting their health at risk, that’s just selfish and unacceptable. Tracy Sweeney right ok I’ll sit at home whilst my family go on holiday. I’ll miss out on making memories as my child grows, I’ll miss out on seeing relatives that live abroad. Why the hell not hey, wouldn’t want to burden anyone. In fact maybe I should just consider euthanasia as I’m constantly having help in one way or another. I’d love to know how long they waited for assistance though.
